Google struggles to keep pace with search competitors empowered by AI.

In March, Google’s staff was taken aback to learn that Samsung, the South Korean electronics manufacturer, was contemplating replacing Google with Microsoft’s Bing as the default search engine on its devices. 

Bing had long been considered an also-ran in the search engine market, but its prospects improved significantly after it incorporated cutting-edge artificial intelligence (A.I.) technology.

According to internal communications examined by The New York Times, Google was in a state of “panic” in response to the Samsung challenge, as the contract was estimated to be worth around $3 billion in annual revenue. 

In addition, a similar contract with Apple worth roughly $20 billion is set to expire this year.

The rise of A.I.-driven rivals such as the new Bing represents the most significant threat to Google’s search business in 25 years, prompting Google to develop a new search engine that harnesses A.I. technology.

The company is also updating its existing search engine with A.I. capabilities, according to internal documents scrutinized by The Times.

Google’s team is developing new features under the project name “Magi” by bringing together designers, engineers, and executives in sprint rooms to experiment with and fine-tune the latest iterations. 

The upcoming search engine is expected to provide users with a more personalized experience than the current service by anticipating their requirements.

Lara Levin, a spokesperson for Google, stated that while not all brainstorming sessions or product ideas result in a launch, the company is thrilled about introducing new A.I.-driven features to search and will share more information shortly.

Google’s search engine is used by billions of individuals worldwide every day for everything from locating restaurants and directions to comprehending medical diagnoses. 

The basic white page with the company logo and an empty search bar in the center is one of the most frequently accessed web pages globally. 

Any modifications to it would significantly impact the lives of regular people, and until recently, it was challenging to imagine anything supplanting its dominance.
