In the wake of Microsoft’s recent policy announcement regarding AI-generated content on Microsoft Start, Meta (formerly known as Facebook) has unveiled its own set of rules. These guidelines extend to AI-generated content across Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

Clear Labeling for AI-Generated Content

The ongoing global debate centers around whether governments should regulate artificial intelligence. One prevailing viewpoint suggests that AI-generated content should carry a distinct label, informing users that it was created using AI.

Meta has taken this concept to heart and will now apply the “Made with AI” label to various types of content, including photos, videos, images, and audio.

How Meta Identifies AI Content

Meta employs two methods to identify AI-generated content:

  1. Industry-Shared Signals: By analyzing patterns and characteristics commonly associated with AI-generated media, Meta can automatically detect content produced using artificial intelligence.
  2. User Declarations: Users will also have the option to explicitly declare that they are uploading AI-generated content. This transparency ensures that the labeling process remains accurate.

Balancing Public Interest and Deception Risks

Meta’s vigilance extends beyond mere labeling. The company recognizes that certain content holds broader public interest and may impact users significantly.

For such cases, Meta will use a more prominent label—one that highlights the risk of deception. However, the specific criteria for determining content importance remain undisclosed.

Policy Implementation and Continued Standards

Starting next month, Meta’s new AI content policy will take effect. Notably, Meta will no longer remove manipulated media from its platforms. However, the company emphasizes that its existing policies and Community Standards still apply to all content, including AI-generated media.

In an official blog post, Meta explains its rationale: “A majority of stakeholders agreed that removal should be limited to only the highest risk scenarios where content can be tied to harm, since generative AI is becoming a mainstream tool for creative expression.”

As AI continues to shape our digital landscape, Meta’s commitment to transparency and responsible content management remains at the forefront of its strategy.
